When I suffered my mis carriage in February, 2010 my co-workers were so sweet and touching to me. I received flowers, sweet cards, phone calls and emails of thoughts but what meant the most to me was, I took 2 days of work off and the ladies that I worked with shared what happened with all the office so when I came back to work there were no questions, no "How are you feeling today?" nothing but hugs and to proceed with our day as usual!
While many like to grieve with everyone, I didn't want to do that at my work place, given I had been there for almost 7 years. Everyone grieves differently and it's ok to go back to work and share your news with everyone but it's also ok to have someone else do it for you!
As a co-worker the best thing you can do is show you care and you're there but not go over-board. It's hard to know that fine line to cross, but you will know the person and how to handle them! Just be an ear to listen and shoulder to cry on if need be! Be attentive and allow a little time off, sensitivity and accomodations!
